Annual Report 2024
The 2024 Annual Report of the Green Investment Principles (GIP) offers a detailed assessment of sustainable finance progress across the Belt and Road region, grounded in a four-pillar framework: Governance and Strategy, Risk Assessment and Management, Investment and Corporate Footprint, and Disclosure and Engagement.
Governance and Strategy:
Signatories have continued to embed climate and sustainability considerations into their core business strategies. Many institutions have established dedicated sustainability governance mechanisms, with increasing board-level oversight of climate issues. Several signatories are aligning executive incentives with ESG performance and adopting long-term net-zero targets, reflecting a stronger commitment to transition planning.
Risk Assessment and Management:
Environmental and social (E&S) risk management frameworks are maturing across the GIP community. Signatories are expanding their risk assessments to include climate scenario analysis, physical and transition risks, and biodiversity considerations. Stress testing and risk disclosure practices have also become more sophisticated, with climate risk increasingly influencing lending and investment decisions.
Investment and Corporate Footprint:
Green and transition finance activities are gaining momentum. Institutions are setting green asset targets and improving tracking mechanisms, while also identifying high-carbon assets and initiating decarbonization efforts. Biodiversity finance and green supply chain products are emerging areas of innovation. Operational carbon footprints are now widely measured, with growing attention to financed emissions.
Disclosure and Engagement:
Climate-related disclosures have significantly improved in depth and coverage, especially regarding governance structures and green asset management. However, capacity gaps remain in quantitative reporting and financed emissions tracking. Stakeholder engagement efforts are expanding, with signatories increasingly participating in international disclosure initiatives and developing long-term sustainability communication strategies.
